Which path will you choose?

Let’s say that you know your root position triads and are becoming interested in using some inversions in order to connect your chords with smooth voiceleading.

Here’s the question:

Is it better to learn to play 10 songs really well using root position chords, even though you think it sounds better to use smooth voiceleading…

or

Should you focus on learning only 1 song, but with the mix of root positions and inversions that you prefer?

The first way is easier, and will give you the experience of playing more songs. The second way is harder, limits the number of songs you’ll enjoy playing, but gives you a taste of playing at a more advanced level.

Given a finite amount of practice time, which will you choose? (Spend some time thinking about this; the question goes deeper than it may appear at first glance.)
