Learning the craft of songwriting

At some point in your songwriting journey, you’ll need to “take the plunge” and immerse yourself in the type of songs you want to write.

Learn to play some songs in the style you compose in. For instance, if you write contemporary pop music with jazz influences, learn 10 Stevie Wonder songs very well. By playing these songs over and over, you’ll start hearing music in the same way and it will begin to naturally write music using those same techniques.

This is how every great songwriter began to learn their craft. You can start by writing down your list of 10 songs. Do it today.

Becoming a fluent improviser will help your songwriting tremendously. Here are some free lessons to get you started.
