How much music theory do you really need to know?

How much music theory do you really need to know?

Really.

Do you need to know that some cadences are “perfect,” and others “imperfect?”

Do you need to know that the scale you’ve been playing for years is called “The Mixolydian Mode?

Do you need to know what “Sonata Allegro Form” is?

Here are some possible answers to these questions:

1. Yes
2. No
3. Yes, but you don’t necessarily need to know their names.
4. Who cares about all this anyway?
5. You only need to know what you’ll use.
6. Of course you do!

You can pick and choose which answer is best for you, but remember one thing: there’s no downside to learning.

Enjoy the journey, and “let the music flow!”
