The Jazz Pianist’s Ultimate Guide To The Real Book

cover

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve written a resource to help you get familiar with all the tunes in The Real Book. It’s called The Jazz Pianist’s Ultimate Guide To The Real Book and it’s available for free on the KeyboardImprov.com website.

Learning a jazz tune involves much more than merely looking at a leadsheet and playing the notes. The great pianists like Art Tatum, Bud Powell, and Chick Corea also learned to play jazz by listening to the songs and learning about who composed them. And perhaps most of all, they discussed the tunes with their musical peers:

“Hey, check out this tune!”

“Oh, you play Confirmation? Then you’ll also like Charlie Parker’s Au Privave.”

“That tune has great changes but the bridge is really hard.”

“Have you tried practicing Giant Steps with continuous 8th notes?”

This is what I’ve done with The Jazz Pianist’s Ultimate Guide To The Real Book.

For every tune in The Real Book, I’ve given you a history and overview, recommended recordings and videos to listen to, shared valuable jazz piano practice tips along with musical observations, and provided further links and resources so you can continue learning.

My goal is to provide you with the kind of learning you’d get “on the scene,” as if I was right there with you, sharing what I know about the tunes you’re working on.

Here are the Table of Contents and Introduction to what I hope is a valuable resource to help you become a better jazz pianist. Good luck, and remember to have fun at every step of the way!!!
